WRM produced this 10 minute video on the impacts of the paper industry: “We hope that the video will be a useful tool for campaigning against excessive paper consumption and for linking those campaigns with the struggles of local communities confronting the expansion of pulpwood plantations and pulp mills in the South.”

The Siam Cement Group is looking to expand its eucalyptus plantations to Laos and Cambodia. Poramate Lamroogroj, managing director of Siam Forestry Co, told the Bangkok Post thatthe company had started planting eucalyptus on pilot areas in the two countries. The wood is to be transported to SCG’s pulp mills in Thailand. “We are looking to secure raw-material supplies in the long term after there is no more area for eucalyptus in Thailand,” Poramate said.

On the day that Unifiber announced that it has executed the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract for its proposed 600,000 tonnes per year pulp mill, the share price fell by almost 12%.

(May 2007): Aracruz is the world’s largest producer of bleached eucalyptus pulp, producing a total of 27 per cent of the world’s bleached eucalyptus pulp. The company produces a total of 3 million tonnes of pulp a year, and has an area of almost 280,000 hectares of industrial tree plantations plus about 90,000 hectares grown under contract with farmers. Aracruz has expanded its operations by 1.3 million tonnes since 2000 and the company recently submitted an EIA to the authorities in Rio Grande do Sul State in Southern Brazil for new million tonnes a year pulp mill.

Andritz has announced a €100 million order from the Hunan Tiger Forest & Paper Group to supply equipment for the Tiger Group’s pulp mill in Huaihan, Hunan Province.
